If a parent/guardian or dancer wishes to share content not directly related to Mattierin or EIDA (i.e., non-official announcements, unrelated opportunities, or personal promotions), they must first request permission from Mattierin privately before posting.
  • Mattierin dancers and families must be respectful of the facilities.

Media Release

  • By registering with Mattierin (including class trials), dancers may be photographed and/or videoed during classes, workshops, summer camps, August 2025 activities, July 2026 activities, school-sponsored activities, or events wherein Mattierin participates. Mattierin School of Irish Dancing may use the photo(s) and/or video for promotional purposes (social media, website, and other print/digital materials) without financial compensation and without further written consent. In some cases, the dancer's name may also be used.

Social Media Policy

  • Mattierin respects the right of dancers and families to use social media as a medium of self-expression. However, in order to preserve the reputation, professionalism, and morale of Mattierin, it is essential that dancers and parents/guardians use social media in accordance with this policy.
  • For the purposes of this policy, “Social Media” refers to internet media, such as chat rooms, newsgroups, personal blogs, personal websites, and social networking websites (Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) that allow individuals and organizations to share information about themselves and others, including photographs, videos, comments, statements, and views about various aspects of their lives.
  • Because of the broad reach of social media, any publication or statement involving Mattierin that is made by a dancer or family member through social media will be regarded as a statement made to the public at large. Dancers and families must recognize this expectation when making statements/publications using social media.
  • The posting of Mattierin choreography on social media is strictly prohibited unless explicit written permission is granted by Merv, Patti, Jessica, or Rebecca.
  • In accordance with CLRG social media guidelines, competing dancers may not be posted on social media in full costume or with any reference to name or age group 10 days prior to the commencement of a Major Competition (e.g., Oireachtas, All Irelands, Worlds, NAIDC, etc.).
  • Dancers, parents, guardians, and families must refrain from posting or sharing any negative, harmful, defamatory, or disparaging remarks about Mattierin, its teachers, dancers, families, workshops, activities or events on social media or other public forums. Any concerns or grievances must be addressed privately and respectfully with Mattierin directly, following the studio’s communication and conflict resolution policies.

Social Media Sharing Clarification

Sharing & Celebrating on Social Media
  • Parents and dancers are welcome and encouraged to share photos or videos of their dancer performing, practicing, or celebrating their achievements to positively promote their dancer and Mattierin on social media.
  • When sharing, we kindly ask that you:
  • Tag Mattierin where possible to help promote the school.
  • Keep posts positive and respectful, highlighting the dancer’s achievements and the community spirit of Mattierin.
  • Avoid posting full choreography or class material publicly without prior permission, as these remain part of Mattierin’s intellectual property. Small clips for celebration or promotion are perfectly fine.
  • Please avoid posting videos or photos of other dancers without their family’s permission, unless it’s an official Mattierin performance already shared by the studio.
  • This allows families to celebrate their dancer’s journey while protecting the integrity of Mattierin’s choreography and the privacy of other dancers.

Code of Conduct

At Mattierin, we are dedicated to providing a supportive, positive, and enriching environment for all our students. To ensure the highest standards of conduct and to foster a community of respect, we ask all dancers, parents/guardians, families, and guests to adhere to the following Codes of Conduct.

Dancer Code of Conduct

  • Uniform Requirements:
    • The class uniform must be worn at all classes in order for a dancer to attend.
    • This includes a Mattierin top, shorts in black, green, orange, or white (with black being the standard when specifically requested), white dance socks, appropriate dance shoes, and hair secured back neatly.
    • Dancers will not be permitted to participate if they are not in full uniform.
    • All uniforms must be clean, fresh, and well-maintained for every class and event, right down to socks. Dirty, stained, or unwashed uniforms, including socks and tops that carry odors, are not acceptable and will result in the dancer being asked to change before participating.
  • Modesty Coverage:
    • To maintain a professional and comfortable environment, all dancers must ensure full coverage of the upper thigh and pelvic area during all movements and stretches.
    • Dance briefs, fitted spandex under-shorts, or leggings are recommended under shorts to ensure coverage during all choreography and stretching.
    • Teachers may privately request a dancer to adjust their attire if it does not provide appropriate coverage.
  • Support & Proper Undergarments:
    • As dancers grow and develop, appropriate support becomes essential for comfort, injury prevention, and maintaining a professional studio appearance.
    • Dancers must wear well-fitted, supportive undergarments suitable for high-impact movement.
    • Parents/guardians are responsible for ensuring their dancer has adequate support for their level of activity.
    • If a dancer’s current attire does not provide enough support or coverage, teachers may privately contact the parent/guardian to request an adjustment for the dancer’s health, comfort, and professionalism.
  • Track Uniforms for Competitions:
    • Mattierin track uniforms are mandatory for all competitive, team, and routine dancers.
  • Curriculum Expectations:
    • Competitive dancers of Mattierin are required to participate in teams, solos, and performances, or teams and performances as part of the school’s curriculum.
  • Additional Appearance & Hygiene Standards:
    • Proper undergarments must be worn and not visible.
    • Deodorant should be worn when required. If it becomes a recurring problem, teachers will notify the parent/guardian.
    • Perfumes and body sprays may not be used in the facility as some dancers have allergies.
    • No dangly earrings shall be worn. Only one earring per ear may be worn at performances and competitions.
Dancers of the school will:
  • Be respectful of all dancers, teachers, and families at all times, both inside and outside the studio. This includes in-person interactions, online platforms, and discussions with others about fellow dancers, parents, and instructors. There is a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for disrespect in any form.
  • Be supportive of each other both in the studio and at all events, activities, competitions and performances.
  • Show good sportsmanship at all times.
  • Celebrate and support their peers even when they are disappointed with their own results.
  • Conduct themselves with pride for themselves, the Mattierin School of Irish Dance, and their families at all times.
  • Respect the decisions and authority of the teachers.
  • Be inclusive of all fellow dancers. No dancer should be left out intentionally. Everyone should feel welcome to participate in class activities, team work, and social interactions. Support and kindness are expected at all times.

Parents/Guardians, Families, and Guests Code of Conduct

Respect and Sportsmanship
  • Encourage positivity: Promote a positive and supportive environment for all dancers, instructors, and other parents.
  • Respect for all: Show respect to all dancers, parents/guardians, families, guests, instructors, feis and/or event personnel, and all members of the Irish dancing community.
  • Zero Tolerance Policy: There is a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for disrespect in any form, including in-person interactions, online platforms, and conversations with others about fellow dancers, parents, instructors, or staff.
  • Trust your teachers: Parents must respect and accept teacher decisions regarding class placement, classroom curriculum, costumes, dancer appearance (including hair and uniform requirements), and participation in performances and competitions.
  • Stay within boundaries: Parents must not overstep boundaries with teachers—teachers are professionals who determine what is best for their dancers, including how they should look, what they should wear, how their hair should be styled, and the choreography they will learn. Parents should trust that teachers have their dancer’s best interests in mind and remain supportive. If a teacher seeks a parent’s opinion, they may provide it but should always defer to the teacher’s expertise and respond with support for the teacher’s final decision. This respect ensures dancers also respect their teachers and the professional environment of Mattierin.
  • Support the broader dance community: Mattierin values positive relationships with other Irish dance studios and kindly asks families to support this spirit of respect within the wider Irish dance community.
  • The pace at which a dancer progresses is determined solely by the teacher. Parents should not be concerned if their dancer is moving at a different rate than another dancer. Additionally, parents must not interfere with or comment on another dancer’s journey except to offer positive, kind, and genuinely supportive words—never passive-aggressive or discouraging remarks. Negative talk, gossip, or undermining other dancers, parents, or families will not be tolerated. While Mattierin cannot always verify hearsay, repeated patterns of reported negativity will be addressed privately and may result in consequences if deemed harmful to the studio community.
  • Do not contact EIDA about studio matters: Parents and guardians must not contact the Emerald Isle Dancers’ Association (EIDA) regarding any issues related to Mattierin policies, decisions, or concerns, as EIDA is not responsible for addressing studio matters.
Communication
  • Effective Communication: Communicate respectfully with instructors, staff, and other parents. Address concerns or questions directly with the appropriate person, preferably outside of class times.
  • Conflict Resolution: Handle conflicts calmly and privately. If issues arise, follow the studio’s established procedures for resolution.
  • Before Raising a Concern:
Mattierin will only address concerns that are communicated respectfully, professionally, and with the intention of finding a constructive solution. Complaints or emails that are hostile, inflammatory, or purely negative will not be entertained.
  • 24 Hour Rule: Mattierin has adopted the 24-hour rule to allow time for significant concerns to be addressed without immediate emotional responses—especially in the presence of other parents and youth dancers.
  • After 24 hours, if the issue remains a concern, the parent/guardian must respectfully and professionally email Mattierin, keeping communication concise, constructive, and free from rude or inflammatory language. Unconstructive or disrespectful emails may not receive a response until they are rewritten in an appropriate and professional manner to dance@mattierin.ca to schedule a meeting with both the parent/guardian and the dancer in attendance, along with the teachers.
  • Meetings will not be held solely with a parent or guardian; the dancer must also be present to ensure clarity, accountability, and constructive resolution.
  • If a parent or guardian refuses to attend a meeting with their dancer present, the concern will be considered null and void. Alternatively, if they are unwilling to engage in this process, they may choose to withdraw from the school, understanding that all fees remain non-refundable.
Support and Encouragement
  • Be a cheerleader for your dancer(s) and for all dancers: Provide encouragement and support to your dancer(s), avoiding undue pressure or criticism regarding their dance performance. Remember, you are their cheerleaders, and the instructors at Mattierin are their coaches. Passive-aggressive comments, gossip, or competitive behavior toward other dancers or families will not be tolerated and may result in consequences under this Code of Conduct.
  • Attendance and Punctuality: Ensure your dancer attends classes, rehearsals, and performances on time. Communicate any absences in advance as per studio policy. Parents/Guardians will ensure their dancer(s) follow the dress code for each class, the Dancer Code of Conduct, and the Conditions of Registration.
Conduct at Events
  • Event Etiquette: Follow all rules and guidelines provided by event organizers. This includes being respectful in the audience and following any specific instructions related to the event.
  • Representation: Remember that you represent Mattierin Irish Dance Studio at all times. Conduct yourself in a manner that reflects well on the studio. Access to certain events or venues may not always be possible for parents or guardians, including those who drive or transport dancers to and from performances, competitions, or feiseanna. In some cases, venue capacity limits may prevent you from entering the room when your dancer is competing. In these situations, you must remain respectful, accept the guidelines provided, and never create a scene or challenge the instructions given—especially when communicated by Mattierin staff or representatives. Failure to remain respectful or attempts to challenge event or venue guidelines may result in loss of future access to events or performances at the discretion of Mattierin.

Consequences for Violations

  • Failure to adhere to this Code of Conduct—including any disrespectful behavior, negative or harmful actions, or failure to comply with studio policies—may result in one or more of the following.
  • In cases of serious misconduct, Mattierin reserves the right to move directly to suspension or permanent dismissal without following each step below:
    • Verbal or Written Warning: A reminder of the expected behavior and an opportunity to correct it.
    • Temporary Removal: Removal from the WhatsApp Community, classes, competitions, activites or events for a specified period.
    • Probationary Status: Continued participation under specific written conditions and monitoring.
    • Suspension: Temporary suspension from classes, performances, competitions, activites or events.
    • Permanent Dismissal: Removal from the Mattierin School of Irish Dance without refund of any fees, at the discretion of Mattierin’s leadership.
  • Mattierin has the right to dismiss a dancer, parent, or guardian from the Mattierin School of Irish Dance without refund of any fees if their behavior is deemed inappropriate or in breach of the Conditions of Registration or Code of Conduct. In the event of dismissal by Mattierin, families remain responsible for any outstanding tuition or fees for the season, as outlined in the withdrawal and payment policies.

Confidentiality, Community Integrity & Intellectual Property

  • At Mattierin, our programs, choreography, music, class content, and training methods are the result of many years of professional experience and development. To protect the integrity of our school and ensure a positive experience for all dancers, we kindly ask families to respect the following:
  • All choreography, music edits, class materials, lesson structures, and training techniques remain the exclusive property of the Mattierin School of Irish Dance.
  • Families, dancers, and guardians are kindly asked not to copy, record, or share Mattierin materials or internal communications (such as class videos, WhatsApp posts, or schedules) outside the Mattierin community without prior written permission.
  • Dancers and families should not use Mattierin choreography, techniques, or program content for teaching, performing, or instruction outside of Mattierin without explicit approval.
  • We kindly ask that families support positive relationships within the wider Irish dance community by:
    • Not soliciting or “poaching” dancers from other studios to join Mattierin.
    • Encouraging enrollment in a positive way—welcoming brand-new dancers, those moving to the city, or dancers who are genuinely looking for a new studio.
  • Likewise, families are kindly asked not to encourage current Mattierin dancers to leave for another studio, teacher, or competing program.
  • In rare cases where these requests are not respected, Mattierin reserves the right to take appropriate action to protect the integrity of our programs and community.
  • This policy helps us maintain the quality, originality, and supportive relationships that make Mattierin a strong and respectful part of the broader Irish dance community.

An Choimisiuin Le Rinci Gaelacha, Dublin, Ireland, the W.C.I.D.T.A, the N.A.I.D.T.A, the Mattierin School of Irish Dancing and all practice and performance facilities are not responsible or liable for any personal injury, lost or stolen items.

COVID-19 Agreement

Over the past while things have been very different for our dancing community. We have all had to adjust to life in lockdown and for many that has brought serious challenges. Our dancing community has, however, strived to continue the love of Irish Dance in each and every one of its members, dancers and wider circles. Through quick resumption of online classes, for many, a move to outdoor for some and more recently, a move back to indoor classes, our dancing community has never ceased with its main aim of keeping Irish Dancing alive.

Now that we are fortunate to be in a position to resume our indoor classes it is important to take stock of the “new norm” with regards to the way we will run classes. Health and safety are paramount to each and every one of our staff, parents, dancers and their families. We now have to embrace a stricter regime of health and safety within our class and so we wish to draw your attention to our assumption of risk/waiver of liability agreement particularly following COVID-19. We require all parents/guardians and dancers to agree to same in order to participate in our classes.

We will abide by the guidelines set out by Alberta Health. Should we need to cap the class based on dancers registered, we will do so.

In consideration of being allowed to participate in lesson, competitions, performances and other activities in conjunction with our school following COVID-19, I hereby agree that:

1. Travel to and from and participation in practices, rehearsals, group lessons, private lessons, public and private performances, local, regional, national and worldwide competitions and other related events and activities pose a risk of possible exposure to and illness from infectious diseases including, but not limited to, MRSA, influenza, and COVID-19. Although particular rules, precautions and personal discipline may reduce this risk, the risk of serious illness and death does exist; and

2. I knowingly and freely assume all such risks both known and unknown, even if arising from the negligence of the providers or others and assume full responsibility for my participation; and

3. I willingly agree to comply with the stated and customary terms and conditions for participation as regards protection against infectious diseases. If, however, I observe and any unusual or significant hazard during my presence or participation, I will remove myself from participation and bring such to the attention of the nearest official immediately; and

4. I have the personal obligation to abide by the laws and guidelines set out by Alberta Health and the City of Edmonton.

5. I, for myself and on behalf of my heirs, assigns, personal representatives and next of kin HEREBY INDEMNIFY this school of Irish Dance, its officers, officials, agents, and/or employees, other participants, sponsoring agencies, sponsors, advertisers, and if applicable, owners and lessors of premises used to conduct the event (“providers”) with respect to any and all illnesses, disability, death or loss or damage to person or property whether arising from the negligence of the provider or otherwise, to the fullest extent permitted by law.

*Conditions of Registration are subject to change at any time.
